Integration Bee at VCU

Rules and Regulations

  1. The competition is only open to VCU undergraduate students.  Participation by members of the VCU community (faculty, staff, graduate students, etc.) as audience members is highly encouraged!

  2. Audience members are encouraged to solve integrals on paper but are not allowed to yell out answers. If such a thing occurs, the current question will be re-started with a new integral to solve. No smart phones or computers allowed.

  3. We reserve the right to limit participants (first-come, first-serve, so sign-up ASAP!).

  4. Groups of at most 3 will be formed by students in the competition. We encourage students to be in a group but any size group ≤ 3 can compete (size of 1, 2, or 3).

  5. Questions will be a mixture of multiple choice and free response. The integration constant for indefinite integrals does not need to be specified.

The next rule depends on the number of participants.

  1. The competition will have three parts.

    1. In the first part, each group will have to answer an integral correctly in 90 seconds to continue on.

    2. In the second part [lightning round], all groups will compete simultaneously for each question that lasts 2 minutes long. The top 2 groups from each match will continue to the final round (first to evaluate/answer the integral correctly). This will go on until there are 8 (or some 2n number of) groups make it to the final round.

    3. The third part [final] will be a head-to-head competition among the remaining groups, each match lasting 2 minutes.

  2. In the last two parts: Answering a question incorrectly does not eliminate the group automatically. It only eliminates you from winning that particular match (there is a chance you can play the next match).

  3. A head-to-head match between the bottom two of the final four will determine 3rd place. The final match between the remaining 2 groups will decide 1st and 2nd place.
